Competition Repertoire Requirements

 

ALL WORKS MUST BE MEMORIZED

Please read carefully. Failure to comply may result in disqualification!

Each contestant must provide a list of three selections they will be prepared to perform.

Each contestant must bring to the audition three copies of each piece to be performed for the judges. All music will be returned immediately following the audition.

A maximum of 10 minutes will be allowed for each contestant to perform for the judges in each round, including the Final Concert round.

The actual amount of time a candidate performs will be at the judges’ discretion, and will not guarantee, enhance or jeopardize the evaluation.

Applicants should choose from the submitted list what they consider to be their best work as the first selection to perform for the judges. This selection should be of sufficient skill level to carry them through to the final round.

Judges may choose to hear additional works from the list. Judges may also choose not to hear each work or not to hear any work to completion.

Piano applicants: Please note that piano concerti selections requiring piano/instrumental accompaniment are not allowed for this competition.

Collegiate Level – All Divisions*

You must submit with your online application, one repertoire selection from each of the music periods listed below:

Selection 1
: Baroque Period 
[For example, a work by J. S. Bach, Corelli, Scarlatti, Handel, etc.]

Selection 2
: Classical Period[For example, a work by C.P.E. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, etc.]

Selection 3
: Romantic or 20th – 21st Centuries [For example, a work by Brahms, Bartok, Beethoven, Bernstein, Liszt, Rossini, Stravinsky, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Weber, etc.]

* Vocal Division competitors must perform at least one work in English and one work in another language. The third selection may be either English or another language.

 

High School Level – All Divisions

You must submit with your online application, one repertoire selection from each of the music periods listed above.

 

High School Level Exception – Vocal Division Candidates

Selections from Musical Theater of sufficient skill level are acceptable and may be substituted for one of the three required periods.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Candidates will compete throughout the competition within their divisions. Semi-finalists and finalists will be determined in each division at the discretion of the judges *.

High School Candidates will compete only with others at the high school level. Collegiate candidates will compete only with others at the collegiate level. Prizes will be awarded at both the high school and collegiate levels.

All candidates will be evaluated in the following general categories. Evaluations in particular disciplines will be specific to those disciplines.

* Judges reserve the right not to advance a division to the finals if no suitable candidates are found.
